Platter

The Swirl Pattern

I've been working with the swirl pattern for a number of years. Its a symbol that is found in many cultures, and it has a simple, yet dynamic, quality.

I feel it echoes the circular motion that exists in pottery, much of which is generated from the spinning motion of the potter's wheel.

I like to leave throw-lines in the clay, which you can especially see in my bowls. They're in the platters too, but stretched and altered by the way I create the shapes.

Platters

Lately I've been creating platters with a more organic feel. The shapes are a little less uniform, which allows me to be more expressive with my glazes.

I enjoy working this way because each piece takes on its own unique quality. This gives more choice when someone is considering the one they want, and it makes for a more personal connection to the chosen platter.
