Sorrento Stoneware Handbuilding One of the ways we work is by starting on the wheel, and switching to handbuilding. This kind of vessel is referred to as "thrown and altered". Normally handbuilding doesn't involve the wheel, but we like to do it this way.

1 - The pot is thrown on the wheel.

2- Next it is altered into another shape.

3 - Clay is added with a handmade stamp.

When finished, the vessels above will be utensil jars. We'll follow this set all the way through to the glaze firing.

Here's another approach to handbuilding. Sheryl begins with a thick disc that she's thrown on the wheel. She tosses it on a canvas work table until it becomes oval. Then she shapes it into a platter.
