Mug Handles

Mugs

Making mugs happens over two days. The first day I throw the mug shape, and make the handles. Both are covered in plastic overnight, which allows them to dry a little, but not too much.

In the morning, handles are attached. This is also when I stamp in any designs that I'm using.

Handbuilding

One of the ways I work is by starting on the wheel, and switching to handbuilding. This kind of vessel is referred to as "thrown and altered". Normally handbuilding doesn't involve the wheel, but this is a big part of my approach.

Throwing a Cylinder
1 - The pot is thrown on the wheel.
Shaping a Cylinder
2 - Next it is altered into another shape.
Stamping a Cylinder
3 - Clay is added with a handmade stamp.

When finished, the vessels above will be utensil jars. We'll follow this set all the way through to the glaze firing.

Here's another approach to handbuilding. I begin with a thick disc that I've thrown on the wheel.I toss it on a canvas work table until it becomes oval, which I shape into a platter.
