Utensil Jars in Process

by Mark Hemmingson

Utensil Jar

The first thing I do when making utensil jars is get a clean shape to work with.

Whether it be simple and smooth, or a nice contour my aim is to create a blank canvas.

They sit overnight and firm up. In the morning I add handles and stamp them with swirls to give character and detail.

At this point I also like to shape the mouths, sometimes squaring them off, other times creating an oval.

Once I’ve attached the handles and stamped the design they’re ready for the kiln.

I do about twenty at a time aiming to make each one unique.
